His acting touches me the most. I’ll be reviewing ‘The Mask’ which was released on this day in 1994. Let’s start…

Iconic dialogues from this movie

The Mask/Stanley Ipkiss: “You were good, kid, real good. But as long as I’m around, you’ll always be second best, see?”

Tina Carlyle: The Mask/Stanley Ipkiss: All right, this is the moment where a man shows what he’s truly made of. (gun cocks next to his head) Crap.

The Mask/Stanley Ipkiss: All right, this is the moment where a man shows what he’s truly made of. [gun cocks next to his head] Crap.

Critic Reviews

“Carrey and his aggressive overbite are back, but this time he’s better used as an ingredient instead of as the plot.” Chicago Tribune

Plot Summary

A shy bank employee finds a mask made by the god of disguise itself that transforms him into a completely different person and can bend reality. His life takes a different direction after that as he faces hilarious and adventurous challenges.

The most identified character of all time

The Mask has the most relatable character of all time; Stanley. I think most people born and raised in the United Kingdom or the United States can identify with the protagonist Stanley in one way or another. After watching hundreds of films and web series, and reading an enormous amount of review articles, I can confidently say that the most celebrated characters of all time have this feature in them. They are relatable to the audience. Their problems being the same as the problems of the audience and their struggle matches with the struggle of the audience. Let me prove myself. Let us take any character for example. Let’s take Jon Snow from the game of thrones.

This character is more famous than the series itself. He started his journey as an unwanted child in a family, who has every capability to be successful but is not getting any chance to prove himself because of his status (they use the word Bastard in the series). Well, everyone is capable of something. Everyone is good at something or at least they think they are good. But they do not get any chance to prove themselves. You see? The struggle matched. The character became an insane sensation.

Now take Chandler Bing from friends for another example. He is a shy guy around women. A needy guy who uses sarcasm as a defense mechanism and is trapped in his job. If you look deeply, everyone hates their job. Don’t they? Almost everyone pees in their pants when a beautiful dame comes near them and almost everyone who is trapped is sarcastic about things. The qualities and struggle matched People identified with Chandler and he became an insane sensation.

Now, look at our boy Stanley. Stanley is an underdog. He is a hopeless romantic, ‘Nice guy who is down and out on his luck (kind of similar to Bruce almighty). Now you tell me. Isn’t everyone the same? I am not talking philosophy here. But, you get my point. The audience saw themselves in him.

A unique story

An underdog, unlucky, and a nice guy finds a weird mask that transforms him into a completely different being. He hides it from everyone. All this is very appealing and fascinating. I am a movie freak and I have never seen such a thing in any movie before. The kind of thing you will only see in the Ben 10 cartoon series that was released a few years after the movie. The story of this movie, as you can see for yourself, is very unique. This adds an element of spice to the film.

Conclusion

The Mask Review

There we go, guys.
