Summary

Set against the backdrop of Mangalore, a funeral ritual is happening in a house. As a last-day ritual, food is offered to the souls of the deceased. During this time, no one is allowed to go inside the house. Accidentally, Ashoka enters the house in haste. While everyone is worried that the ‘spirits’ might get angry because of this act, Ashoka stays unbothered. The villagers nearly catch Ashoka peeking while a girl he has a crush on is bathing. In an attempt to flee, he begins acting as though a ghost is possessing him. Ravi Anna, the villagers’ go-to man and hero, then sets out to free Ashoka from the ‘ghost.’

Ashok continues to pretend possessed, enduring all the tests thrown at him by the priest and the villagers to ‘satisfy’ the soul that has possessed him. As events turn out, Bhaanu from a neighbouring village visits him, believing she is possessed by her mother’s soul. Bhaanu finds peace by sharing her turmoil with Ashok, changing his perspective towards her, more as a protector. Ravi Anna and Ashok reunite for Bhanu, turning the fake, cooked-up drama for real by the end.

Review

It is difficult to say who scored high in this movie. Was it macho yet cute, Ravi Anna? Was it the drunken menace, Bhava? There is no one answer for this question. Su From So became such a big blockbuster, or in other words, a much-needed gush of fresh air for the Kannada Film Industry, only because of teamwork. This complete package of a film excels in every departmentโ€”be it casting, music, cinematography or performancesโ€”this movie is a perfect package!

Tales from the coastal area of Mangalore always feel so grounded, sweet, and full of life. The film Su From So consistently maintains its freshness throughout. With many familiar faces we have seen onscreen, the tale starts with Shaneel Gautham and J. P. Thuminad at the forefront. Initially, Thuminad, who is also the director of the movie, chooses to take a backseat. Shaneel Gautam scores high as Ravi Anna, a name no one will forget after watching this movie. Shaneel was able to pull off being the innocent yet go-to guy of the village. Thuminad slowly comes into the limelight with more prominence towards the second half, and the duo pulls it towards a strong yet banger climax. Sandhya Arekere, as Bhanu, did a phenomenal job being Ravi Anna’s love interest. Amongst the glamorous, pompous faces we have watched a thousand times, Sandhya brought back the beauty of being ‘beautiful’ naturally.

Raj B Shetty does an extended cameo as his entry shifts the gear to a whole new level. Sumedh K got a dream debut as a music director, making all the songs instant chartbusters. Every character who comes onscreen despite their screentime will stay etched in your heartsโ€”thanks to the power of good writing. In short, Su From So is full of innocence and tremendous fun with some fleshy crux as well!

Conclusion

Su From So is an unmissable work of art from the Kannada film industry that brought back the beauty of good commercial cinema.
