Introduction

The Indonesian dystopian drama A World Without, which is currently streaming on Netflix, explores the lives of women and ideas of female empowerment. The film depicts a dark side to the race to success and definitely has cult-like overtones, whether it’s the institution where the protagonists attend or the way certain things are ruled out for each gender in the film.

Nia Dinata directs the film, and she also co-wrote the script with Lucky Kuswandi, who is also a director and writer. A Perfect Fit, a romantic comedy that was the streaming giant’s first original Indonesian film in 2016, will be the second Indonesian film to be co-produced by the streaming giant and a local production house after A Perfect Fit.

Amanda Rawles portrays Salina, Maizura portrays Ulfah, Asmara Abigail portrays Tara and Ayushita, and Chicco Jerikho portrays the husband-wife duo Sofia Khan and Ali Khan in the film A World Without. The mystery-thriller drama has a running time of 1 hour 47 minutes and is available in both English and Indonesian, as well as with subtitles in both languages.

Plot Analysis

The film takes place in 2030, ten years after a pandemic that has had a devastating impact on the entire world. An educational institute known as “The Light” has sprouted up amid the rapidly aging world, assisting students in becoming the best versions of themselves while also preparing them for marriage and banning the concept of dating. Our three main characters, Salina, Tara, and Ulfah, all set out to find themselves in a better place in the world when they arrive at ‘The Light.’

Welcome to ‘The Light,’ a world without darkness.

‘The Light,’ on the other hand, is not what it appears to be. With propaganda hidden beneath its towering infrastructure and enticing career and life prospects, ‘The Light’ is on its way to establishing a more sinister presence in the international arena. The girls enthusiastically proceed with their life in the institution, completely unaware of the secrets that are kept hidden from them, until things don’t start clicking in the right place and they are forced to look beyond the glittering life that the institute has to offer.

What’s good and what’s wrong?

The film is thrilling and exciting, with twists and turns that we may be able to predict but never see coming until they happen. This science-fiction thriller takes us on a journey that will help us better understand how the lives of children and teenagers can be manipulated and put on a dark path to follow. However, it also emphasizes the importance of expressing one’s viewpoints and the fact that an individual should be allowed to live his or her life in the manner in which they choose. Additionally, it provides us with an understanding of how women are treated around the world. ‘The Light’ is a metaphorical body that holds back and twists the minds of young people in accordance with their desires and social privilege.

A World Without is a quick and dark watch if you are a fan of the thriller genre, as it contains a lot of suspense, drama, and thrill. The film appears to be almost identical to Amazon Prime Video’s Nine Perfect Strangers, which is based on the Liane Moriarty novel of the same name.
