Andhaghaaram: A Fresh take on Horror

Whoever is into the genre of horror knows the current situation of Indian movies in that genre. Most don’t have anything new to offer other than the usual jumpscares and bloodshed ending with some cliched conjuring tantrums.

Only a few movies stand apart with a unique and fresh storyline in this genre and the recently released Andhaghaaram is one among those.

β€œ An atmospheric thriller that has more highs than lows.”

What’s it About?

Characters

Selvam is a blind man who works as a clerk in a library and is also a conjurer who helps spirits fulfill their wishes.

Vinod is an ex-cricketer who is a coach currently and who lingers over the mysterious death of his best friend.

Dr. Indran is a psychiatrist who almost gets killed by one of his patients but survives somehow.

Story/Plot

The movie revolves around the parallel happenings in these three people’s lives which are connected mysteriously.

Dr. Vinod, who lost his family due to his patient who kills himself after shooting Vinod decides to take a different path, seeking revenge.

Selvam, who had lost his father, tries to capture a supernatural occurring for money so that he can save the only existing memory of his father, ie, his house.

Vinod starts receiving strange calls to his telephone that acts as a medium for conversing with spirits.

Gradually it is revealed that all these three stories are happening in three timelines and what connects them unravels slowly. Vinod must find a way to drive the evil powers away from his life, but essentially he should find the root cause and solution.

Review

The one defect you will immediately notice in this movie will be its run-time. If made shorter, Andhaghaaram would have been much better. But again, both technically and narration wise the movie stands tall.

It may take time for the audience to get completely connected to the screenplay but Andhaghaaram never loses its flow till the end.

Arjun who has already made his mark with negative roles gets a full-fledged performance-oriented role here and he is convincing as Vinod onscreen.

Vinoth Kishan has done a very good job being Selvam who is blind. Kumar Natarajan’s performance was worth mentioning as the spooky psychiatrist and he is the driving factor.

Verdict ?

This technically strong movie with a strong star cast assures you thrills and chills alike. If you are looking for a movie to keep you thinking till the end, at times making you go Oh? And Oh!, go for Andhaghaaram.
