“The Dark Side”

Asur’s Punch LIne

Asur was recommended by one of my friends when we were locked down in our houses due to the Covid-19. If you are fond of thriller movies then you are surely gonna love this one.

What’s it about?

Asur is one of a kind as it is a psychological thriller with a blend of forensics and Hindu Mythology. This web series leaves you guessing the next series of events. And believe me, you will fail several times as things turn around quickly in no time. The story revolves around the protagonists both of whom used to work together in a forensics team at CBI. The antagonist or say antagonists portray himself as learned men having great knowledge of Hinduism. As it turns out in “reality” – they are a bunch of psychopaths who murder people for ideology.

Premise

Asur is unlike any other web series and follows a premise that is not just limited to one place. Equal attention has been paid to both the protagonists i.e. Dhananjay (Arshad Varsi) and Nikhil Nair (BarunSobti) as well as the antagonist. The antagonist keeps murdering people barbarously and tries to provoke the police by leaving some hints after every murder. He tries to bring the best of the protagonists by compelling them to get involved in all situations. You will witness how the way a person is brought up can change his thinking towards society.

Performances

Arshad Varsi

I had always been a fan of Munna Bhai MBBS and it is from there that I started loving Arshad Varsi’s acting. Arshad has only gotten better over time. It’s difficult to ignore the fact that he has done some good research before entering into the shoes of a Forensic Inspector. That being said, he has lived the character save for the time when he played the role of a husband.

Barun Sobti

Nikhil i.e. Barun Sobti does a decent job of supporting the main lead i.e. Dhananjay.

Vishesh Bansal

The key takeaway of this web series was the acting of Shubh (Vishesh Bansal). Vishesh has portrayed the character in a way that it’s hard to imagine someone replacing him. It is his presence in the story that instills seriousness in this series.

Others

The other characters like Sharib Hashmi, Anupriya Goenka, and Amey Wagh also deserve a good amount of praise for their supportive role in the series.

General Overview

This web series has set a perfect stage for a more unique web series like this one. With every scene unearthing, viewers start expecting more twists and turns but it fails to live up to the expectations as the murder mystery is solved on the basis of hunch and not evidence. Moreover, they created a lot of hype about the antagonist but the revelation of his identity lacked logic and sense. However, this series has done a great job in showing us that all of us have a dark side and it takes a little to bring it out. The thing that disappointed me the most was the climax that could have been a lot better and thrilling.

Final Words

Overall, it is a must-watch web series if you are looking for something different. It will persuade you to introspect with the use of ideology, dialogue delivery, and some great acting skills.
