What’s it About?

One Line Summary: “The story of a regular Gully Boy to an eminent rap sensation!”

“Gully Boy” is a Zoya Akhtar Bollywood movie based on the famous artists Naezy and Divine. The movie showcases the struggle of a regular slum boy who dreams of becoming a rapper. The movie is based and shot in Mumbai’s slum area Dharavi.

“Gully Boy, starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, is one of Zoya Akhtar’s stronger films.”

~ Rajeev Masand

Bollywood had made a lot of musicals like Rock On, Rockstar, Ae Dil hai Mushkil, but Rap is a music genre that nobody acknowledged until Gully boy. Gully Boy brings out this underground Hip-Hop culture.

I would rate this entertainment package film a high 9/10!

Plot/Story Line & Main Characters

Ranveer Singh (Murad Ahmed) plays the protagonist of the movie and is the central theme of the movie. He is a normal boy staying in the gullies (narrow lanes) of Dharavi with his family consisting of his father (Aftab), his mother (Razia), his younger brother (Sohail), and his grandmother.

Murad’s father works as a driver whereas his mother is a homemaker. Murad is fond of singing and has extra-ordinary dreams of becoming a rapper.

Murad overcomes all of his obstacles in the truest sense of words; then be it a family trying to make ends meet, a family where his father gets married to another woman, and brings her home, or the poverty that defines him in the society and not his God-given talent!

But all is not bad for Murad, he has a love interest Safeena (Alia Bhatt) who comes from a decent family. Daughter of a doctor and herself a medical student.

Safeena is a fiery, bold, unabashed, and unapologetic woman who’s set her eyes on becoming a surgeon and is fiercely possessive about Murad.

She doesn’t want any girl to talk to Murad, says “Mere boyfriend se gulu gulu karengi toh dhotuengi na usko”.

The best thing about Safeena is her wicked smile that shuts the mouth of other people.

Other Characters

Murad finds MC Sher (Siddhant Chaturvedi) in his college function and gets exhilarated after watching his rapping skills. Sher then becomes his guru pal and helps him work for his dream.

Sher realizes Muraad’s potential. As if Muraad picks all the stones thrown at him by society and makes milestones out of them!

Vijay Verma (Moeen) is a carefree character who steals cars and illegal drugs to make money.

Sky (Kalki Koechlin) has a little screentime in the film but plays her role well!

Murad goes on to chase his passion combating everything that is thrown at him. His character can be defined as a destructive, fighter, and somebody who picks himself up after a bad fall.

The best things about Gully Boy

The gully language consisting of words like Bantai, macha daal, bhai, bohot hard makes the movie more convincing and relatable. All the performances in the movie, be it Amruta Subhash, Vijay Verma, Siddhant Chaturvedi, Vijay Raaz deserve an ovation along with the leading actors.

The screenplay of the movie is accurately perfect. The songs Doori and Azaadi with their powerful lyrics show us the dark side of Bombay.

The song Ek he Raasta is touching shows the sorrow which cannot be explained and the belief of “why are we not where we want to be in life”!

Some super amazing dialogues in the movie like below, leave us stunned in and inspired.

Abhi koi aur batayega main kaun hai!”

~ Murad (Ranveer Singh). Gully Boy.

Main nahi badalta apna sapna apne sacchai se mel khane ke vaaste, main apna sacchai badlega jo mere sapne se mel khaaye”

~ Murad (Ranveer Singh). Gully Boy.

Gully Boy has one of the most powerful music albums in Bollywood. And Ranveer has completely nailed them! He raps as nobody can ever do it like him.

Finally

Gullyboy is truly an inspiring movie. It has given music a totally different turn.

Gully Boy in simple words feels like a ray of sunshine.

Watch Gully Boy already if you haven’t watched it yet, kyuki movie bohot hard hai bantai!
