“β€˜Michael’ movie review: A labour of love that does not soar”

~  The Hindu

Our rating for Michael is 1/10.

Summary

Michael, an orphan, comes to Mumbai seeking revenge on his father. He joins hands with Gurunath, a don. Michael grows up to be a goon who works for Gurunath. Gurunath sends Michael to spy on one of his suspected enemies, Rathan, and Michael ends up falling for his daughter Theera. Michael spares Rathan due to this. Gurunath’s son Amarnath, who has a grudge against Michael and plans to kill his own dad, captures Michael, Theera, and Rathan. It was Amarnath who actually set up an attack on his dad via Rathan and also attempted to kill Michael after murdering Rathan.

Michael somehow escapes death and starts taking revenge on Amarnath to save Theera. This turns Gurunath against Michael, and a revenge spree starts where Michael and Gurunath’s gang engage in bloodshed.

Review

Since the release of KGF and the sensation it created, a lot of movies have been seen following the same pattern in quality and color grading. Michael is so rich in quality. Let it be the sets erected, cinematography, or art department, everything looks top-notch – except for the plot and performances. What is the point if the container is good but whose contents are crap?

Michael is so disturbing that you will feel like screaming your lungs out and running out of the theatre. If you are watching it on OTT, you might as well break your phone in frustration. How can something that looks so good be so bad?? Sundeep Kishan was somewhat fine and perhaps the only okay thing in this movie. He doesn’t have much to do except fight and look rugged. Divyansha was so bad that she couldn’t even touch the “a” of the word “acting.” In a scene where the hero falls in love with the heroine, the heroine looks so bad doing a bad dance that you will hate her for the rest of your life.

Not sure whether it is the dubbing or the writing, but Gautam Menon felt like the biggest miscast in Michael. He looked so bad that literally, he was the ‘baddy’ in the movie. The only thing that brought a bit of relief watching this good-for-nothing movie was Vijay Sethupathi’s extended cameo. Even though his hair looks so fake, it will be automatically ignored considering how bad the movie is. The climax of Michael gives a heads-up for Part two and what happens on-screen might make you feel puke, so take this as a warning.

Conclusion

Don’t even go anywhere near the movie Michael, and consider this review a warning.
