Introduction

Sardar Udham, available on Amazon Prime Video, is a biographical drama about the revolutionary Shaheed Sardar Udham Singh, who was instrumental in igniting the hustle for freedom and exacting vengeance for the horrifying Jallianwala Bagh massacre. The film is in Hindi and tells the story of the revolutionary Shaheed Sardar Udham Singh. Vicky Kaushal will star in the film, which will be released in 2021 and is directed by national award-winning director Shoojit Sircar, who will also produce the film. The film has a running time of approximately 2 hours 40 minutes and follows Udham Singh throughout his life.

Plot summary and analysis

Although the Jallianwala Bagh massacre is memorialized in India’s history books, the events that led up to it go far deeper than the words on the pages. The incident was soaked in the blood of innocent civilians, whose trauma can still be heard screamed out every time you walk down the streets of Amritsar today. It is still a source of anxiety for every Indian, and watching Amazon Prime’s Sardar Udham was a soul-stirring reminder to look more carefully into our past and appreciate the heroes whose songs have become more muffled with time.

Documentary at its finest

In this film, which is based on the life of the revolutionary freedom fighter Udham Singh, we are taken through the back alleys of India, where people are fighting for the fundamental right to exist as a sovereign state. Sardar Udham Singh is best known for assassinating Sir Michael O’Dwyer, who had endorsed Reginald Dyer’s decision to open fire on a peaceful gathering at the Jallianwala Bagh, which resulted in the deaths of several hundred Indians and was one of the most important factors in igniting India’s struggle for independence. The assassination of Sir Dwyer served as a symbolic act of retaliation for all of the innocent people who died during the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in 1919.

This biographical film depicts Udham Singh’s life, including his involvement in the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, his friendship with Shaheed Bhagat Singh, the time he spent in London gathering support and developing relationships with other communist comrades, his assassination, and his subsequent sentencing and imprisonment. Rather than telling the story in a linear fashion, flashbacks are used to depict the emotional and factual aspects of the story.

‘Sardar Udham’ awakens the dormant patriotism that has been dormant in everyone’s hearts and paints the idea of revolution boldly across our television screens. This film is a beautiful tribute to the brave Sardar who not only fought for the independence of the country on his own, but also promoted the idea of a secular India by renaming himself Ram Mohammad Singh Azad while in detention in the 1960s. The dialogues that are interspersed throughout the film have a powerful impact on you, and the cinematography is absolutely perfect in its presentation of the story.

Vicky Kaushal, please take a bow for Sardar Udham.

However, playing a character as real and essential as Shaheed Sardar Udham Singh puts one under a significant amount of pressure, which is something that Vicky Kaushal is well aware of.

Similar to how Sardar Udham Singh led his revolution, Kaushal carries the unwavering mission of Sardar Udham in his eyes as he directs the film. Bhagat Singh (Amol Parashar) gives a speech in which he distinguishes between an act of revolution and terrorism, and then stands strong and undefeated despite the painful way he is treated in the prison at London prison, each in his own way. Vicky Kaushal is a delight to watch on the screen once more, and this time he makes us feel rather proud of himself by brilliantly conveying the message and character of Udham Singh to the viewing audience.

Sardar Udham is more than just a documentary about the 1919 massacre at Jallianwala Bagh and the events that followed it; it is also a contemplative journey into the hearts of every helpless Indian living under the British Empire who wished to be free of the shackles that kept them from living their best lives.
