Summary

Murali and Venu, together, leave their hometown and set off to Kodambakkam to earn their place in Indian cinema. Murali is a talented musician, and Venu is into writing. After struggling for some days, Venu finds a producer with Murali’s help and starts to make a movie. Murali gives away the song he composed to a different composer and makes him promise that Venu should not know about it.

Venu’s debut becomes a blockbuster, and Murali’s song becomes a chartbuster with a different name credited to it. Murali becomes heartbroken and starts to dive more into alcoholism. As Venu slowly builds up his life, Murali stoops down to the streets. One fine night, a fight breaks out between the two friends, and Murali flees from the city. It will be too late when Venu realizes it is because of Murali that his debut became a blockbuster and he was able to standardize his life.

Years later, the duo meets again. Both have been through a lot of ups and downs by now. Murali and Venu decide to pursue their dream of making a movie again. With the help of an assistant director, they evaluate Venu’s script to see whether the story is compatible with the new age audience. Slowly, things start to align in favor of this maker-composer combo, and they decide to hire a new-gen star named Nithin Molly to play the title role of the movie.

The rest of the story is about what happens during the making of this movie and how many small incidents and people shape the lives of these two best friends.

Review

Vineeth Sreenivasan yet again takes us to Chennai, with another heartwarming story of friendship with Varshangalkku Shesham. Unlike his previous movies, Varshangalkku Shesham has a period touch, with most happenings in the first half being dated to the late 80s. Kodambakkam in Chennai is considered to be a dream world for people who are aspiring to earn a place in Indian cinema. Vineeth and his team succeeded in erecting the old- Kodambakkam with the help of a good art department, which looked convincing on screen.

Nivin Pauly in Varshangalkku Shesham’

Talking about performances, Dhyan Sreenivasan delivered his best in Varshangalkku Shesham. The actor looked mature, handling the shades of various phases on Venu. Pranav as Murali was fine, but the actor still looked contained in his own templated way of performing. The biggest perk of Varshangalkku Sheshaam is its ensemble cast and what each actor brings to the film. Aju Varghese, Neeraj Madhav, Basil Joseph, and Nivin Pauly all contributed big-time to the movie’s success. Nivin Pauly requires a special mention as we got to witness the fun-filled side of him yet again, literally as the title of the movie, ‘Varshangalkku Shesham’. He was phenomenal and shouldered a major part of the second half of the movie, saving it from boredom.

The first negative of Varshangalkku Shesham was its screenplay. Even though there were beautiful movies throughout the movie, they all looked scattered and didn’t contribute much to emotionally connecting to the story or the characters. The second minus was the lack of impactful scores or songs that a Vineeth Sreenivasan movie usually has in abundance. The third flaw with Varshangalkku Shesham was bad makeup, especially for Pranav. While others, including Dhyan, looked really convincing, Pranav didn’t suit the aged look well.

Varshangalkku Shesham, despite all its flaws, continues to perform well in the box office because of the clever balancing of commercial elements in the movie.

Conclusion

Varshangalkku Shesham is a feel-good entertainer, a movie you could go and watch with your family on big-screens!
