What’s it About?

Dear Zindagi is a Gauri Shinde 2016 movie starring Alia Bhatt and Shahrukh Khan in the lead roles. The movie shows the basic life problems of a young cinematographer Kaira and her struggle with relationships.

“If you’re in the mood to do some soul-searching this weekend, Dear Zindagi could do it for you.”

Times of India

It’s a story of a  young girl who deals with the problems we all face but maybe never tell anybody under the fear of judgment.

My very own ratings for Dear Zindagi would be 7/10!

Performances

“Kaira” portrayed by Alia Bhatt plays a cinematographer who is pursuing her dream job in the city of dreams “Mumbai”.

“Kaira” is a young, smart, and career-oriented woman. She loves her work and dreams of making a feature film one day. She is fun, confident, and out there. Her style of dressing is funky and comfortable. She likes to keep things disorganized.

Jehangir Khan called “Jug” played by Shahrukh Khan is a good-looking, charming character who is extremely easygoing.

Plot/StoryLine

The first half of the movie deals with the establishment of Kaira’s character. She dates a restaurateur named Sid (Angad Bedi) and cheats on him for her tall and handsome work colleague Raghuvendra (Kunal Kapoor). But Kaira being upfront; she admits the truth to Sid and breaks up with him.

Where Raghu thinks Kaira will get a job just because she is “hot” and not talented enough. He offers Kaira a big project in New York. Sadly she soon finds out that “The Raghu” she had a fling with gets engaged to someone else in New York.

At the same time, her landlord asks her to leave the house because she is unmarried. This still happens in our country where the society distrusts the “struggling single girls” and thus refuse them to stay in the rental apartments.

Kaira is torn between this series of downfalls offered by life. Left with no choice, she has to unwillingly return to Goa to stay with her parents. She deals with insomnia and starts seeking therapy from a Psychologist named “Jehangir Khan” (Shahrukh Khan).

Kaira then opens up about everything which has been bothering her since her childhood, right from her discomfort towards her parents, to the fear of being left alone.

Kaira soon starts living and seeing life from a different perspective.

Shahrukh’s intense dialogues like “Kabhi kabhi hum mushkil raasta isliye chunte hai kyuki hume lagta hai important cheeze paane ke liye hume mushkil raasta apnana chahiye”(Why do we always believe that in order to achieve something important in life, we should always choose the difficult paths) give us some major reality checks!

What I liked about “Dear Zindagi” Most

Some life lessons given by Shahrukh are worth applauds, but my absolute favorite scene in the movie was; Kaira standing next to her work colleague (who is gay and is seeking therapy) and asking him “Are you seeking therapy because you want to tell the world that you’re gay?” To which he replies, “No, to tell myself”! Which in such a simple and easy way tells us, that “Acceptance” in life is so important.

Along with the lead actors, the subordinate actors have done a great job. Amit Trivedi’s on-time perfect music is a total mood!

“Love you Zindagi” gives us chill feels whereas Sunidhi’s  “Just go to hell” makes us want to cry our heart out!

Final Verdict

“Dear Zindagi” is most definitely not a cliche  Bollywood movie where the actor falls in love with the actress and makes the promise of staying with each other for 7 lives! It surely is based on the story of a young lady but all the people of every age group will find it equally relatable.

“Dear Zindagi” is a fresh movie with a fresh story. It makes us realize that it is okay to fall in and out of relations in life. An overall good film; can be watched with parents. Definitely a “don’t be harsh on yourself, life is short and beautiful” vibey film!
