Plot Summary
Cindy Mancini, a cheerleader, messes up her momโs expensive outfit. She is terrified as she knows her mom will kill her for this. Ronald Miller, a nerd from her school, agrees to buy the same outfit for her mom, which costs $1000, for one condition; She will have to pretend to be his girlfriend in from of the whole school. This makes him famous in the school. But when his friend gets left behind. Ronald realizes his mistake and tries to make things like they were before.
Simple plot, message to youth, and Directorโs good work
Of course, the central theme is self-acceptance, achieving self-acceptance in the terrible world of teenagers. Despite some crappy conversations and artificially cheesy moments, it still shines. Director Rush almost combined it to ensure that the protagonistโs charm is of great significance to the characterโs participation, although the script is only superficial in terms of the depth of the theme. The life lesson of this movie for young people is that the things you desire now are not what they seem on the surface. They are not the really important things in life. In the long run, they may not make you happy. Indulging in short-term desires and passions can interfere with the rational processing capabilities of the brain, leading to dishonesty, regret, loss of dignity, and self-esteem.
Congratulations to director Steve Rush, screenwriter Michael Swarbrick, and the cast. Basically, due to two unexpected reasons for its genre, this movie is the best of all the young romantic comedies that I have seen. First of all, the movie has twists and turns in the story and character development, making various endings possible, stimulating your interest, and making you curious about what will happen next. Second, this movie doesn’t just have the general laid-back elements of this type, like parties, interpersonal relationships, and discord between different social “classes” in high school.
Stunning Acting performances
The best of this movie is Amanda Peterson, whose character Cindy must be one of the most flattering “caught” high school girls in the movie. Watching his character grow and opening up to Ronald is the main reason why I visit this movie repeatedly. Although the genre is completely different, I will compare Peterson’s role with Renee Zellweger’s role in Jerry Maguire in terms of sympathy.
It is much more difficult to make characters likable than to make them likable. Frankly speaking, I am surprised that Peterson’s career has not developed rapidly after this performance. Patrick Dempsey has always been underrated as a stylish actor, unfortunately, his role as Ronald was so unflattering after the film’s premise began. Ronald “From Geek to Hipster” is back. But Dempsey himself seemed too confident to be really a geek, and he was too cruel to the girl he won because Ronald is a truly compassionate character. The elegant take on Ronald is worth checking out though, even if it’s too much in the context of an already unlikely plot.
Conclusion
This movie may not be the greatest of the all-time but this movie is a piece of entertainment that will not bore you and make you fall asleep. Make sure to visit your favorite OTT and watch it.
